AGLA Honored by Virginia General Assembly

At AGLA’s April 25 reception, Delegate Adam Ebbin presented the following proclamation that passed in the General Assembly. Commending the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.


Patrons-- Ebbin, Brink, Eisenberg and Englin; Senators: Ticer and Whipple

WHEREAS, the women and men of the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance are recognized for their commitment to improving the Arlington community through education, public service, and leadership; and

WHEREAS, established in 1981, Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance (AGLA) is the oldest continually operating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organization in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, AGLA's mission is to provide community service in Arlington; raise political, nonpartisan awareness of gay and lesbian voices; and provide an arena for social and recreational events; and

WHEREAS, AGLA is integrated into Arlington's community and participates in the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and the Arlington County Fair, conducts environmental cleanup projects, and raises money for the Arlington Food Assistance Center, the Arlington Free Clinic and other charitable groups; and

WHEREAS, since 2000 the AGLA Scholarship Fund has awarded scholarships to up to three college-bound high school seniors from Arlington public schools who have made an exceptional contribution towards openness, diversity, and safety; and donations continue to grow; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kris McLaughlin, President of the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance, as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for continued success.
